새로운 소식과 보고서 – 에티오피아

여러분들 모두 아름다운 성탄절과 새해를 보내셨기를 바랍니다. 2020년 새해를 시작하면서 우리 모두를 향한 제 진실한 기도제목은 우리 모두가 주님의 주권과 우리 삶을 향한 하나님 나라의 목적 앞에 다시 모이는 것입니다. 하나님의 나라에서 당신을 통한 주님의 사역에 우리는 감사하고 있습니다.
아래에는 에티오피아에서의 저희 사역의 몇 가지 새로운 소식입니다.
1. 성탄절 선물로 고아들과 취약한 어린아이들에게 염소를 배분하였습니다.염소 프로젝트가 매해 그 영향이 커지고 있고 많은 이들의 삶이 이 프로젝트로 인해 상당히 변화하였기에 하나님께 감사드립니다. 바로 저번 주에 저희는 나자렛 Nazareth, 웰렌치티 Welenchity, 그리고 보파 Boffa에 있는 10여개 마을에서 온 16명의 고아들과 취약한 어린아이들에게 16마리의 염소를 나누어 줄 수 있었습니다. 이로 인해 얼마나 그 아이들이 기뻐하고 하나님께 감사하였는지 말로는 표현할 수 없습니다.
보파 마을에서 온 한 목사님은 이 선물로 인해 그 마을의 교회가 성도들뿐만 아니라 그 마을의 고아들도 보살핀다는 메시지를 전하는 역할을 하였다고 말했습니다. 그 결과로 그 교회의 명성은 높아졌고 새로운 개종자들이 점점 늘고 있습니다. 또 그가 덧붙이기를, 그 프로젝트는 마을의 더 많은 사람들에게 예수님에 대한 복음을 전하는 도구가 되었다고 하였습니다.
그의 간증에 따르면, 부모님을 잃고 나이든 할머니와 함께 살고 있는 한 9살 소녀는 3년 전 염소 한 마리를 받게 되었습니다. 3년이 지난 후, 그녀의 염소는23마리로 번식하였습니다. 이 프로젝트의 결과로, 현재 그녀는 공부할 수 있고 모든 식비와 매년 드는 학교 물품비와 교복비를 감당할 수 있습니다. 심지어 그녀는 7마리의 염소를 그 마을의 도움이 필요한 다른 고아들과 취약한 아이들에게 아낌없이 주었습니다. 하나님을 찬양합시다!!!

2. 에티오피아 북쪽 타이그레이 Tigray 지역, 메호니 Mehoni 마을의 주민을 위해 빵을 나누어 주었습니다.틸라운 아베 Tilahun Abebe는 에티오피아 북쪽에 있는 타이그레이와 아파르 Afar의 저희 지역 조정자 중 한 사람입니다. 그는 메호니라는 마을에 거주하며 그의 마을과 타이그레이 전 지역을 위한 비전을 품고 있습니다. 바로 이 주 전, 저는 그 지역을 방문하여 하나님께서 그곳에서 하신 놀라운 일들에 감사했습니다.
다른 마을에서 온 그리스도인들과 그가 가지고 있는 현지에서 만든 두개의 빵 굽는 기계와 함께 그는 취약한 아이들에게 무료로 빵을 나누어 주었으며 지역 주민들을 위해서는 합리적이고 적당한 가격으로 팔았습니다. 이 프로젝트의 영향은 대단하였고 많은 이들에게 미쳤습니다.
그렇지만, 한 가지 어려움이 있었는데, 그 기계가 현지에서 생산되었기에 전기 소비량이 매우 높아서 이 프로젝트에 영향을 끼치고 있습니다. 그래서 지금 그는 전기 소비량이 낮은 더 좋은 기계를 사는 것을 고려하고 있습니다.

3. 에티오피아, 타이그레이 지역의 기도와 위로의 컨퍼런스에티오피아 북쪽 타이그레이 지역을 방문한 저의 목적 중 한 가지는 기도와 위로의 컨퍼런스를 개최하는 것입니다. 타이그레이 지역과 그 주변에 있는 아파르 지역에는 11개의 교회가 있습니다. 이 지역은 동방 정교회와 이슬람 종교 지지자들의 수가 지배적이라 교회들은 많은 곳에서 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 기도와 예배를 위해 모일 수 있는 장소를 빌리는 것과 지역 사회에서 제명당하는 것 등의 어려움이 있습니다.
이 주 전, 저는 상대적으로 모이기에 수월한 메호니라는 마을에서 기도와 위로 컨퍼런스를 준비하였습니다. 12개의 서로 다른 마을에서 온 25명 이상의 지도자들과 기도 용사들이 함께 모여 7일동안 기도와 금식하며 하나님의 말씀을 함께 나누고, 그 지역의 중심지에 있는 사탄의 활동을 무너뜨렸습니다.
저는 기도책에 있는 몇 가지 내용을 그들과 나누었고 그것으로 기도하였습니다. 비록 그들이 “티그리냐 Tigrigna”라는 다른 언어를 사용하여서 암하라 Amharic 말로 번역된 책을 나눌 수는 없었지만 제 협력자가 저를 도와 그것을 해석해주었습니다. 저는 “기도책”을 티그리냐 언어로 번역하여 배분할 필요가 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 만약 그렇게 된다면 이는 에티오피아에서 암하라 어와 오로모 어 Oromo 다음으로 세번째로 기도책이 번역되어 배분되는 것입니다.
그들은 이 만남으로 무척 고무되었고 기뻐하였습니다. 그들 대부분이 말하길 이번 만남으로 많은 위로를 받았고 그로 인해 예수 그리스도 안에서 믿음의 선한 싸움을 계속 할 수 있을 것이라고 하였습니다. 하나님께 감사드립니다!! 이번 새해에는 에티오피아의 다양한 지역에서 더 많은 만남들을 기획하기를 원합니다.

4. 원지쇼와 Wonjishowa 학교에서 성탄절 기념행사가 있었습니다.
성탄절은 많은 사람들에게 많은 의미가 있습니다. 저희들 중 많은 이는 매년 이 시간을 기쁨과 평화의 시간으로 봅니다. 그렇지만, 과거 몇 년간 고아들과 취약한 아이들은 그 계절의 기쁨과 평화를 경험하지 못했습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 외면 받고 버려져 그들에게 사랑과 보살핌을 전해줄 누군가가 없었기 때문입니다.
하지만 주님께서 우리에게 이 작은 어린아이들을 섬기도록 허락해 주심에 감사드립니다. “성탄절 선물과 기념 행사 (CGC)” 프로그램은 지역 사회에서 고아들과 취약한 어린아이들을 돕는 저희 프로그램 중 하나입니다. 지역 사회의 다른 아이들과 함께 고아들과 취약한 아이들을 모아서 그들이 소속감을 느끼도록 하려는 목적에서 6년 전 이 프로그램을 시작하였습니다. 매년 성탄절 기간에 저희는 축하 이벤트, 즐거운 시간, 기도와 찬양을 준비하였습니다. 또한 그들에게 다양한 종류의 선물, 음식, 음료와 사탕을 나누어 주었습니다. 아이들은 너무 좋아하였고 매년 열렬히 그 행사를 기다렸습니다.
원지쇼와 학교에서 지난 거룩한 성탄절날 같은 행사를 진행하였습니다. 제 아내, 아디스키단 Addiskidan이 지역 리더들과 함께 이 행사를 기획하고 진행하였습니다. 어린아이들의 얼굴에 나타난 기쁨과 미소와 웃음은 놀라웠고 인상깊었습니다. 제가 수없이 말씀드렸지만 이 마을의 대부분의 아이들은 생애 단 한번도 선물을 받아본 적이 없습니다. 그래서 그들이 선물을 받았을 때, 그들은 충격을 받았고 긴장했습니다. 그리고 그들은 하나님을 찬양하였고 우리를 구원하시기 위해 하나님께서 그의 아들 예수 그리스도를 가장 큰 선물로 우리에게 주었다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 이 기회를 빌어 이 프로그램을 지원해 주신 모든 동역자분들께 감사드리고 싶습니다. 하나님께서 충만하게 축복해 주시기를 바랍니다.

이 기회를 빌어 전세계에 있는 저희 친구들과 사역 동역자들께 2019년 한 해 동안의 여러분들의 신실한 헌신과 지원에 감사드리고 싶습니다. 지난 해, 저희는 저희가 예상했던 것 보다 더 많은 것을 성취하였습니다. 수천의 영혼이 그리스도로 인해 변화되었고 수천명의 사람들이 세례 받았으며 수백의 지역 교회들과 작은 공동체들, 가정 교회가 심겨졌고 많은 지도자들이 훈련 받았으며 수백의 염소, 양, 닭, 그리고 소를 고아들과 취약한 아이들에게 분배할 수 있었습니다. 오토바이와 자전거가 선교사님들과 지도자들에게 전해졌습니다. 학교와 교실이 세워졌습니다. 암하라어와 오로모어로 번역된 수천개의 기도책이 분배되었고 더 많이 분배될 예정입니다. 이 모든 것은 여러분들의 기도와 지원으로 가능했습니다. 여러분들께 감사드리고 신실하게 하나님을 섬기는 여러분들을 주님이 축복해 주시기를 소망합니다.

- 에티오피아의 현 상황을 위해서 그리고 평화가 그 나라를 덮도록 기도 부탁드립니다.
- 에티오피아 북쪽 지역, 특별히 타이그레이와 아파르 지역에 있는 교회들을 위해 기도부탁드립니다. 그 지역에서 많은 박해와 어려움 가운데에서도 그리스도 안의 믿음을 강하게 붙잡고 나아갈 수 있도록 하나님께서 힘 주시길 기도해주세요.
- 타이그레이 지역의 취약한 어린아이들에게 빵을 나누어 주는 저희 프로젝트를 위해 기도 부탁드립니다. 하나님께서 저희가 더 나은 빵 굽는 기계를 구매하도록 도우시길 바랍니다.
- 올 해에 있을 대규모 세례 행사를 위해 기도 부탁드립니다. 올해 3월에 침례를 준비하는 1,500명 이상의 개종자들이 있습니다. 그들을 마을에서 강으로 옮길 수 있는 교통수단을 마련할 수 있도록 하나님께서 도우시길 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
- 에티오피아 북쪽 지역의 티그리냐 언어를 사용하는 이들을 위해 기도책을 번역하여 배분할 수 있도록 하나님께서 도와주시길 기도 부탁드립니다.

I hope that you all had a wonderful CHRISTMAS and New Year holyday. As we come to begin the NEW YEAR of 2020, my earnest prayer for all of us is that may we all recommit ourselves to His Lordship and Kingdom purpose for our lives. I want you to know that we are grateful for the Lord’s ministry through you in His Kingdom.
The followings are some of the updates in our ministry in Ethiopia.
1.Distributing goats for our orphans and vulnerable children as Christmas gift. We thank God for our goat’s project because its impact is growing year by year and changes many lives significantly. Just last week we were able to distribute 16 goats for sixteen different orphans and vulnerable children who are from 10 various villages in the surrounding towns of Nazareth, Welenchity and Boffa. No words can express how much they were so exited and thankful to God for this provision.
One of our pastors from the village called Boffa named by Burussei said that this gift has impacted his village by brining the message that our church is taking care of not only its members but also the orphans in the village. As a result of that the reputation of the church has increased and the number of new converts getting increased time to time. And He added that the project has become a tool to reach out many more people in the village by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
According to his testimony three years ago a 9-year girl named by Teje Taddese who lost both of her parents and lives with her old grand-mother has got a chance to receive a goat. Now, after three years; her goat has multiplied and reaches 23 additional goats. Now she is able educate herself, covers all her food expenses and also the expenses of school supplies and uniforms every year as a result of this project. She even generously gave out 7 goats to other needy orphans and vulnerable children in her villages. Praise God!!!
2.Providing bread for the community in Mehoni town, Tigray region Northern Ethiopia. Tilahun Abebe is one of our regional coordinators in Tigray & Afar regions in the Northern part of Ethiopia. He lives in the town called Mehoni and he has the vision for his town and for the entire region of Tigray. Just two weeks ago I visited him and I thank God for the incredible things that he is doing in that region.
By mobilizing some other Christians from other towns and he has got two locally made baking machines and distributes bread for vulnerable children freely and for the community with a reasonable and affordable price. The impact of this project is huge and reach out many more people.
However, he has got a challenge, because, since the machines are locally made; the electric consumption is very high and it affects the project. And now he is looking for other options which is buying better machine that have less electric consumption.
3. Prayer and encouragement conference in Tigray Region, EthiopiaConducting prayer and encouragement conference is one of the purposes of my Visit to Tigray region Northern part of Ethiopia. We have more than 11 churches in this region and the surrounding region called Afar. Since the regions are predominately populated by Orthodox and Islam religions followers; our churches are suffering in many ways: - such as the challenge of getting a rental house for gathering for prayer and worship and excommunication from the community.
Two weeks ago I organized a prayer and an encouragement conference in the town called Mehoni which is relatively better town for gathering. More than 25 leaders and prayer warriors gathered together from 12 different towns and villages and spent Seven days in prayer & fasting and sharing the word of God together and demolished the work of Satan the stronghold of the region.
I have shared with them some of the content of the prayer guide book and prayed with it. Even though they speak different language called “Tigrigna” and I could not be able distribute the Amharic translation of the book. But, my organizer helped me to interpret it. I realized that there is a huge need of translating and distributing the “prayer guide book” in Tigrigna language. If we do that it will be the 3
rd language that the prayer book translated and disturbed in Ethiopia next to Amharic and Oromo languages.
They were so encouraged and exited about this meeting. Most of them said that they encouraged a lot by this meeting and it will help them to keep fighting the good fight of faith in Christ Jesus. I thank God for that!! And I would like to organize more meetings in various regions of the country in this new year.
4.Charismas celebration in our School WonjishowaChristmas is many things for many people. Many of us view this time of year as a time of Joy and peace. However, for the past many years; our orphans & vulnerable children did not experience the joy & the peace of the season. Because; they were neglected and abandoned and they did not have anyone who showed them love and care for them.
But, we thank God for the opportunity that He has given us to serve these little children among us. “Christmas gift & Celebration” (CGC) program is one of our projects that we help our orphans & vulnerable children in our communities. We have started this program six years ago with the aim of brining all our orphans & vulnerable children together with other children in the community to make them fill belongingness. Every year in Christmas season; we organize an event of celebration, fun time, prayer and singing. We also provide them various kinds of gifts, meals, soft drinks and candies. The children really love it and longing the event every year with great enthusiasm.
We did the same thing in this past Christmas holy day in our school Wonjishowa. My wife Addiskidan organized and conducted this event together with our local leaders. The joy, the smile and the laughter shown on the faces of those children was amazing and impressive. As I said many times most of the children in our villages have never received any gift in their lives. So, when they received gift they got shocked and became nervous. And they praised God and realized that God has given them the greatest gift ever His Son Jesus Christ to save us. I take this opportunity to thank all our partners who supported us in this program. May God bless you abundantly.
5.Conclusion and Prayer Requests I take this opportunity to thank all our friends and ministry partners all over the world for your faithful commitment and support in the past year of 2019. Last year, we have achieved more than what we expected. Thousands of lives being transformed by Christ, thousands of people have been baptized, Hundreds of local churches /small groups, house churches/ planted, many leaders trained, we were able to distribute hundreds of goats, sheep, chicken and cows to our orphans & vulnerable children. Motorbikes & bicycles given to missionaries & leaders. School/Classrooms build. Thousands of Prayer guide book in Amharic and Oromo languages distributed and many more. I believe that this happened because of your prayer and support. And I would like to say thank you and God bless you as you keep serving Him faithfully.

- Pray for the current situation of Ethiopia and may peace prevails in the country.
- Pray for our churches in Northern part of Ethiopia particularly in Tigray and Afar regions that may God would continue gives them strength to stand firm in their faith in Christ as they are passing through many kinds of persecutions and hardships in the regions.
- Pray for our project in Tigray region which is providing bread for our vulnerable children that may God would enable us to purchase better baking machine.
- Pray for this year mass baptism event. We have prepared more than 1,500 new converts who ready to take water baptism this year March. So, pray that may God would enable us to transport those new believers from their villages to the river.
- Pray about the prayer guide book that may God would enable us to translate and distribute it to the Tigrigna speaking people in the Northern part of Ethiopia.
